K set
K Set: Final Revenue Service and Farewell Tour
To mark the retirement of the K sets, five days of farewell services were planned from 28 September to 2 October 2026, offering members of the public the opportunity to ride the trains on routes across Sydney one last time. The event was intended to give passengers a final chance to experience trains that had served the city's commuters for decades. However, the farewell programme did not go entirely to plan. On 28 September, the opening day's service was terminated short of its scheduled destination at Liverpool following vandalism on board. Further incidents involving anti-social and dangerous behaviour created additional problems. Despite increased security measures, the service planned for 1 October was cancelled. These disruptions were a disappointing turn of events for passengers and railway enthusiasts hoping to say goodbye to the much-loved trains. The K sets operated their final revenue services on 2 October, bringing their regular passenger operations to an end. A further farewell took place on 5 October, the final day of the Transport Heritage Expo. A special chartered K set journey was operated as part of the heritage event, providing a final opportunity to experience the trains after their regular passenger services had ended. Following more than four decades on Sydney's suburban railway network, the K sets finally reached the end of their long career.
K set arriving at Central on 2 October for its final revenue service. I arrived in Sydney the previous day for this trip, but my Qantas flight was delayed by around two hours. Fortunately, the delay did not affect my plans, as the K set farewell service scheduled for 1 October had been cancelled due to safety concerns following vandalism.
K set arriving at Central in an eight-car formation (K71 + K66).
During the five-day public farewell programme from 28 September to 2 October, the opening day's services operated with eight cars. Following vandalism on board, the formation was reduced to four cars to strengthen security and monitoring. However, 2 October marked the final day of regular revenue service for the K sets. With considerable media attention focused on the occasion, the train returned to an eight-car formation for its final day in passenger service.
The final K set revenue service arriving at Platform 1 at Central. The train arrived around 90 minutes before its scheduled departure, ahead of its final journey. The route for the day ran from Central via Epping, Hornsby and Chatswood, back to Central, before continuing to Olympic Park. It was the last revenue service for the K sets, which had served Sydney's commuters for many years.
The coupling between K71 and K66. Following security concerns caused by vandalism during the farewell services, the trains had continued to operate in four-car formations for some time. For their final revenue service, however, they returned to an eight-car formation. It was great to see the K sets back in their full eight-car formation one last time.
A special farewell headboard commemorating the K set's 45 years of service in Sydney's suburban network. The same headboard was displayed throughout the five-day public farewell programme, from 28 September to 2 October, and remained in place for the private farewell run on 5 October, the final day of the Transport Heritage Expo.
A K set stands alongside an Xplorer across the platform. This was the last time the two trains would meet in regular passenger service before the K set's retirement.
The K set waits to depart with Central Station's iconic clock tower in the background. With around 90 minutes scheduled at the station before departure, there was plenty of time to photograph the train at Central before heading out to filming locations along the route. As this was the final revenue service, with media representatives and the Transport Minister among those expected to be on board, the occasion had a very different atmosphere from an ordinary train service.
The K set's final revenue service was covered by Australian news media. The retirement of these trains, which had served Sydney's commuters for decades, attracted attention from both railway enthusiasts and the media. As it happens, I also appear in the news footage.
I went ahead to Concord West to film the K set heading towards Hornsby. The railway bridge at Meadowbank further along the line is a well-known photography spot, but it is backlit in the morning. A local rail enthusiast recommended Concord West as a better location for front-lit shots. Unfortunately, the sky clouded over just as the train passed, but I was still able to capture the K set rounding the curve during its final day of revenue service.
A K set passes through Concord West station. Several railway enthusiasts had gathered here to photograph the trains on their final day of revenue service.
As this was my last opportunity to ride a K set, I decided to travel from Central to the terminus at Olympic Park. Trains arriving from the Chatswood direction enter Central around a curve, allowing me to film the arrival from the platform before boarding the very same train. It was an ideal opportunity to combine filming with one final ride on the K set.
I have been photographing K sets rounding this curve into Central since the CityRail days, but this was likely my last chance to capture them here.
The large farewell headboard suited the train perfectly, making it a fitting sight for its final day of revenue service.
A journey aboard the K set on its final day of revenue service, from Central to the terminus at Olympic Park. Although I boarded at an intermediate station, I was incredibly lucky to find an empty upstairs window seat, perhaps thanks to the eight-car formation. I was able to secure a seat and film the journey while enjoying the views from the window, making this final ride all the more memorable.
The K set arrives at its final destination, Olympic Park. There was plenty of space behind the train, allowing me to photograph its front end head-on. Barriers had apparently been prepared to prevent people from going any further, but the area seemed to have been opened up for railway enthusiasts to take photographs. This provided a good opportunity to capture the K set at the end of its final revenue service.
At Olympic Park station, the front of the train stops almost inside the tunnel, making it virtually impossible to photograph the cab front. There was enough space behind the train to get a clear view of its face, but the front end remained hidden. This brought back memories of Sydney's underground City Circle stations, where the platforms were so tightly fitted to the trains that photographing a stationary K set was often difficult.
A K set stands alongside an M set, which operates on the Olympic Park line. The two generations of trains are seen side by side in the modern station setting. The K set's pantograph looks rather small in proportion to the size of the train, giving it a charmingly distinctive appearance.
A K set departs Olympic Park station, with its spacious layout and futuristic atmosphere. The train pulls away through the station's open surroundings, marking another moment in the final chapter of a train that served Sydney's commuters for decades.
The K set departs Olympic Park station, watched by a large crowd of railway enthusiasts and passengers. It was expected to reverse at Strathfield before heading to Flemington Depot, so I decided to get ahead of the train and try to film it at Flemington station.
As I arrived at Flemington station, the K set's empty-stock train pulled in at just the right moment. I had made it ahead of the train by the narrowest of margins, giving me another chance to film the K set after its final revenue service.
The K set empty-stock train passes slowly through Flemington station. Although the station is just before the depot, the train does not stop and continues directly into Flemington Depot.

A K set enters Flemington Maintenance Centre, bringing its final day of regular passenger operations to an end. Only one final journey remained: a private farewell charter scheduled for 5 October, the last day of the Transport Heritage Expo, marking the final chapter in the trains' long history of passenger service.
On 2 October, I checked the depot at Auburn and spotted another K set, K94, separate from the train that had just completed its final revenue service. It was stabled with its pantograph raised and headlights on, raising hopes that it might head out onto the main line, perhaps for a withdrawal transfer or a possible appearance at the Transport Heritage Expo. However, K94 remained in the same position throughout the day and never moved.
Finally, 5 October arrived — the true final day for the K set. It was also my birthday. I filmed the empty-stock movement from Flemington to Central near Burwood Station. It was a memorable way to spend my birthday, witnessing the very last day of these long-serving trains.
I filmed the K set farewell train as it passed through Burwood on its empty-stock movement towards Central. After this, I headed west in the opposite direction rather than going to Central, ready to photograph the train at other locations along the line.
I filmed the K set farewell charter near Mount Druitt. This train, bound for Penrith, followed the same route as the farewell service originally scheduled for the day I arrived in Sydney. I had planned to photograph that train here, but my already tight schedule was disrupted by a two-and-a-half-hour delay to my Qantas flight, and the train itself was cancelled. This time, I finally got the shot I had missed on my arrival day.
I filmed the K set farewell charter on its return journey from Penrith towards Central. This location would normally offer good lighting, with the sun on the front of the train, but unfortunately, the sky was mostly cloudy that day. Even so, I was glad to finally capture the train at the spot I had originally planned to photograph it.
The K set arrives at Central Station. On 2 October, during its final revenue service, the train stopped at Platform 1, where obstacles blocked a clear view of the front. This time, it arrived at Platform 3, allowing me to capture a straight-on view of the train from the buffer-stop end of the terminus platform.
The K set farewell train runs through a cutting after crossing the railway bridge at Meadowbank. I had originally planned to photograph it on the bridge, but the sky was still overcast. Since the shot would have looked up towards the bridge, I thought the grey sky might blend into the train’s stainless-steel body, making it difficult to get a good image. Instead, I chose this cutting. Sydney has many railway cuttings that look as though the tracks have been carved through the natural landscape, and these are among my favourite railway scenes.
The K set farewell train passes through Meadowbank Station, known for its distinctive curved platforms. The train will reverse at Epping and continue to Blacktown, so I head ahead to the next filming location.
The K set farewell train passes through Lidcombe Station. I had set up my video camera and was waiting for the train, but just before it arrived, a Botany freight line tour train passed through and distracted me. Incredibly, I forgot to press the record button on my video camera — a frustrating mistake!
I filmed the K set farewell train at Summer Hill as it headed towards Gordon via Central after reversing at Blacktown. Passengers would leave the train at Central, making this my final opportunity to capture the K set running with passengers on board.
After dropping off its passengers at Central, the K set farewell train passes through Summer Hill as an empty-stock movement. Many railfans gathered at the station to witness and photograph the train’s final appearance.
The K set farewell train passes through Summer Hill on its way to Flemington Maintenance Centre. I was glad to capture its final moments, making the long journey all the way from Japan to Sydney truly worthwhile.
A collection of videos filmed at various locations during the K set’s final revenue service on 2 October and its farewell charter on 5 October. Featuring the trains’ final appearances at Central, Concord West, Olympic Park, Burwood, Mount Druitt, Meadowbank, Summer Hill and other locations.
I left Sydney on the evening of 6 October, the day after the K set’s final operation. Before heading home, I checked K94 at Auburn Maintenance Centre one last time. It was still stabled with its pantograph raised and headlights on, in exactly the same condition as I had seen it on 2 October. Was it being kept powered up in preparation for preservation, or was it awaiting a transfer for scrapping? I never found out the reason before leaving Australia.
