Steam Locomotive 3801 & 3526
Great Train Races, Double-Header, etc.
On the night of 1 October, two days before the Transport Heritage Expo opened, steam locomotive 3801 made a positioning movement to Eveleigh. The locomotive travelled tender-first (in reverse) so that it would be facing the correct direction to lead the special excursions departing from Central Station during the Expo. I captured this special movement at St Peters Station.
Steam locomotive 3801 passes through St Peters Station running tender-first. With its headlight illuminated, it almost looks as though the locomotive is travelling forwards in the usual direction. However, it was actually running in reverse during its positioning movement ahead of the Transport Heritage Expo.
On 3 October, the opening day of the Transport Heritage Expo, the first steam train excursion of the day passes through Wolli Creek Station. I had originally planned to film this first departure at Central Station as well, but unfortunately, I realised I had forgotten my camera along the way and had to go back to collect it. As a result, I had to abandon the plan to film at Central and made a slight change of plans, starting my filming at Wolli Creek instead.
Steam locomotive 3801 passes through Wolli Creek Station. Built in 1943, 3801 is a C38-class steam locomotive operated by the New South Wales Government Railways and is one of Australia's most famous steam locomotives. Renowned for its elegant streamlined design and impressive performance, it was used to haul passenger trains over long distances. After years of preservation and restoration, 3801 continues to operate on special heritage excursions. During the Transport Heritage Expo, it hauled steam train experiences departing from and returning to Central Station.
Steam locomotive 3801 passes through Wolli Creek, heading towards Hurstville. During the Transport Heritage Expo, the Steam Train Ride operated non-stop return journeys between Central and Hurstville, taking approximately one hour. Departures from platform 2 at Central were scheduled for 10:00 am, 11:40 am, 1:10 pm and 2:40 pm (the final departure operated on Sunday and Monday only). Locomotive 3526, also known as *The Nanny*, operated additional services departing at 10:30 am, 12:10 pm, 1:40 pm and 3:15 pm (the final departure also operated on Sunday and Monday only).
Passengers could travel in beautifully restored heritage carriages from the NSW Government Railways, with an observation car available directly behind locomotive 3801.
After filming locomotive 3801, I moved to Sydenham Station to wait for its return from Hurstville. However, the next locomotive to appear was 3526, hauling the following Steam Train Ride service. During the Expo, 3801 and 3526 operated alternately, with steam trains departing Central at intervals as short as 30 minutes – an impressive and rather luxurious timetable!
Built at Eveleigh Workshops in 1917, locomotive 3526 belongs to the 35 class and is affectionately known as *The Nanny*. It is the only surviving example of the 35 locomotives built. It once hauled famous trains such as the Caves Express between Sydney and the Blue Mountains before being withdrawn in 1967. After preservation and restoration, it returned to operation in 2004 and continues to run special heritage services in its distinctive Brunswick Green livery.
At the rear of the train, diesel locomotive 4403 was coupled as a support locomotive. Built in 1957, 4403 belongs to the NSW Government Railways' 44 class, manufactured by AE Goodwin based on an ALCO design from the United States. The class worked a wide variety of passenger and freight services, and 4403 was preserved following its withdrawal from regular service in 1994.
One of the highlights was its fresh new appearance. After carrying Indian Red livery for many years, 4403 was recently repainted in the distinctive red-and-white SRA "Candy" livery. Following the repaint, it returned to mainline operations at the 2026 Transport Heritage Expo, assisting steam locomotive 3526 on its excursions.

Steam locomotive 3801 slowly passes through Sydenham Station, led by diesel support locomotive 4916. Despite the opening of the Sydney Metro, Sydenham retains much of its traditional railway character, including its distinctive reddish-brown brick station buildings. The combination of modern metro infrastructure and the older NSW railway architecture gives the station a nostalgic atmosphere.
At the front of the train is locomotive 4916, a 49 class diesel locomotive built by Clyde Engineering in 1964. Based on an ALCO design, it produces 950 horsepower and was originally used on freight and passenger services, particularly on branch lines in western New South Wales. Withdrawn from regular service in 1999, 4916 was restored by Transport Heritage NSW and returned to operation in 2022. It now regularly assists with heritage train operations.
A rear view of steam locomotive 3801 as the train passes by. Its distinctive rounded shape and attractive green livery bring to mind Japan's famous Tokyu 5000 series, affectionately known as the "Ao-kaeru" (Green Frog). You could say that 3801 is Australia's answer to Japan's Green Frog! The Tokyu 5000 series has now retired from service on the Kumamoto Electric Railway, but like 3801, examples have been preserved. The big difference is that 3801 remains in working order, continuing to operate on the main line and delight railway enthusiasts.
After returning to Central Station to board the S Set Lavender Bay Train, I found steam locomotive 3526 getting ready to depart. As the steam excursions generally used platform 2 at Central, platform 1 offered a perfect opportunity to photograph the entire train from the adjacent platform.
I had hoped to get a similar full-length shot of 3801, but with so many trains and events to photograph during the Expo, I simply couldn't fit it into my already packed schedule. Perhaps I'll get another chance next time!

Steam locomotive 3526 departs Central Station with a Steam Train Ride service. At this point, however, I was getting a little anxious as the departure time for my S Set Lavender Bay Train was only a few minutes away, yet there was still no sign of it on platform 1. I began to wonder whether I had missed an announcement about a platform change. Despite the uncertainty, I took the opportunity to film 3526 as it pulled away. Fortunately, the S Set eventually arrived on platform 1, slightly behind schedule, and I was able to board without any problems.
A rear view of diesel locomotive 4403. As it was coupled to the passenger carriages, the locomotive's distinctive bulldog nose was not visible; instead, I could see its flat rear end. The bright red-and-white Candy livery brought to mind the former JNR 113 series electric multiple units, particularly the distinctive livery known as *Kasuga*.
The Kasuga livery was introduced on 113 series trains used for express services when the Minato-machi (now JR Namba)–Nara section of the Kansai Main Line was electrified in 1973. It featured a grey body with Vermilion No. 3 stripes. The colour was inspired by the vermilion pillars of Kasuga Taisha Shrine in Nara, giving the livery its name. The red-and-white colour scheme of 4403 has a nostalgic feel that reminds me of those classic JNR trains.
One of the highlights of the Expo every year is the Great Train Race. This time, steam locomotives 3801 and 3526 race side by side along a quadruple-track section!
During my previous visit in 2017, I tried to film the event at Macdonaldtown, on the six-track section between Central and Strathfield. Unfortunately, the train on the nearer track arrived too early and completely blocked my view of the other locomotive. I missed the chance to capture the two trains running side by side.
This time, however, the locomotive on the far track was ahead of the one on the near track from my filming position, so I managed to avoid a complete obstruction. At last, I was able to capture the spectacular sight of both steam locomotives running alongside each other!
This time, however, the locomotive on the far track was ahead of the one on the near track from my filming position, so I managed to avoid a complete obstruction. At last, I was able to capture the two steam locomotives running alongside each other.
Apparently, the two trains sometimes overtake one another during the race. However, as they passed Sydenham this time, they maintained their speeds and approached at almost the same relative distance. As a result, neither train blocked the other, allowing both complete trains to remain clearly visible.
There is probably room for debate over which view is better: seeing both complete trains separately, or having the two locomotives run closer together so that their front ends appear side by side. Either way, after failing to capture a proper parallel-running shot nine years ago, I was very glad to finally get the footage this time!
A short while after 3526 passed, 3801 came along. I hadn't had many opportunities to photograph the full 3801 train, so I was pleased to finally capture a shot showing most of the consist here.
Unfortunately, the smoke from 3801 was carried by the following wind, completely covering the upper half of the locomotive's front. Steam locomotive smoke is almost like a living thing, constantly changing its shape and direction depending on the wind.
Fortunately, just before the locomotive disappeared behind the wires, the smoke drifted backwards, allowing me to capture 3801 emerging from the cloud once again.
Another detail worth noting is that both 3526 and 3801 carry small Great Train Race headboards featuring the event sponsor Downer's logo.
A large crowd gathered at Sydenham Station to watch the Great Train Race pass through. Spectators could be seen not only on the platforms but also in the concourse above.
I filmed the Great Train Race returning through Banksia Station after turning back at Hurstville. This time, a diesel locomotive was leading the train, with the steam locomotives following behind.
The timing was extremely tight. According to the timetable, the Great Train Race was due to pass Banksia almost as soon as my train from Sydenham arrived. I also needed to move from the outer platform, where my train would arrive, to the island platform via the footbridge.
A railfan I had met at Sydenham checked the location of the stairs at Banksia for me. He said he wasn't confident about taking that kind of gamble, but I was confident in my chances! Using the information he gave me, I took the quickest route to the island platform. I just made it in time to capture the train passing through the station!
By this point, there was quite a gap between the two trains, with diesel locomotive DL4403 well ahead. Ideally, I would have liked to see the locomotives closer together, running side by side. However, according to the original timetable, I shouldn't have been able to film the train here at all. So, I was already lucky to have captured it passing through. Well, I did have a feeling that the steam train would probably run a little behind schedule...
DL4916 passed through Banksia Station a little later. I hadn't yet managed to capture the train hauled by DL4916 running along the line, so I suppose this was a worthwhile shot in its own right.
Steam locomotive 3526 passes through Banksia Station, followed by diesel locomotive DL4916. From the central island platform, I managed to capture the two trains racing against each other.
The train, with steam locomotive 3801 bringing up the rear, passed through Banksia Station and continued back towards Central. There, the formation would be rearranged for another run, this time with 3526 and 3801 double-heading. I then headed to Sydenham Station to film it.
At Sydenham Station, I filmed the Twilight Steam Train Ride, hauled by double-headed steam locomotives 3526 and 3801. Departing Central Station's platform 2 at 4:55 pm on Saturday 3 October, the special train made a non-stop round trip along the Illawarra Line to Waterfall and back, taking approximately two and a half hours as daylight faded.
Passengers could travel in heritage carriages, with the option of upgrading to the observation car. Operated by Transport Heritage NSW, this special evening excursion was fully booked.
Double-heading steam locomotives is a sight that is now rarely seen in Japan. Personally, I would have preferred to see the streamlined 3801 leading the train. However, a local rail enthusiast explained to me that, as a general operating practice, the locomotive with the lower power output is placed at the front when two locomotives work together. That was an interesting detail to learn!
About two hours after departing Central, the Twilight Steam Train Ride returned to Central Station after dark. This time, diesel locomotive DL4916 was at the front. Unlike the outward journey, which featured two steam locomotives working together, the return trip was hauled by a single diesel locomotive.
Daylight saving time began the following day, Sunday, when clocks moved forward by one hour. Had the train run after the change, it would have returned to Central in slightly brighter conditions, as sunset would have been an hour later by the clock.
However, the Expo traditionally begins on a Saturday, with daylight saving time starting on the Sunday. This means that the Saturday evening event generally takes place before the clocks go forward each year.
Steam locomotive 3801 was sandwiched in the middle of the train. Perhaps it loses some of its presence when it isn't leading the way. From a distance, the two locomotives almost looked like one much larger steam engine rather than a double-headed train.
Steam locomotives 3526 and 3801 arrive at Central Station, working double-headed. A slow shutter speed gives the drifting steam a wonderfully atmospheric appearance. From the following day, daylight saving time meant later sunsets, and steam locomotive services were scheduled to finish by the evening. This was therefore the only opportunity during the Expo to photograph the steam locomotives standing at Central Station after dark.
This video collection features the Great Train Race and the Twilight Steam Train Ride, hauled by double-headed steam locomotives 3526 and 3801. Enjoy the sight of the two steam engines racing along the quadruple-track section, as well as their powerful double-headed operation.
One of the greatest attractions of steam locomotives is the way their smoke constantly changes shape and drifts with the wind, accompanied by the powerful sounds of their whistles and running gear. These almost living movements and sounds are best experienced in video rather than still photographs.

On the final day of the Expo, I filmed steam locomotive 3526 being hauled back to the depot after all the event services had finished. I captured the empty stock movement near Summer Hill Station. I hadn't had many opportunities to film 3526 running along the line, so I think this ended up being my best shot of the locomotive in motion.
The empty stock movement hauled by steam locomotive 3526 passes through Summer Hill. At the rear is DL4403 in its Candy livery. Unfortunately, I never got to see its distinctive bulldog nose facing forward during the Expo. I'll save that shot for another opportunity!
