10年ありがとう！AUNZ RAILFANの歴史を振り返りましょう！
Thanks for 10 years, let's look back at the history of AUNZ RAILFAN!
オーストラリアを中心としたホームページAUNZ Railfanをなぜ作成しようと思ったか、そこから振り返っていきたいと思います。
遡ること15年前、2010年2月に初めての海外旅行ひとり旅はオーストラリアでした。
当初はオーストラリアのことを全然知らず、どうせ行くなら各州都を訪問したいと思い、ブリスベン(半日)→XPT→シドニー(半日)→インディアンパシフィック→アデレード(1泊)→夜行バス→メルボルン(1泊)→XPT→シドニー(3泊)という、北海道初心者が札幌から函館や釧路や旭川を盛り込んだようなクレイジーな旅程でした。
2012年にはシドニーを経由し、ニュージーランドに初上陸。
当時はオーストラリアやNew Zealandの鉄道を紹介する日本語のページが少なかったこともあり、2427Junction.com氏のように海外の鉄道を紹介する個人サイトの運営を妄想しつつも、大学卒業や就職の忙しさで趣味活動から離れてしまいました。
しかし就職1年程で血液のガンが発覚、抗がん剤治療や骨髄移植のため3年程病院と自宅での療養生活を余儀なくされました。
幸いにも病室はWIFIも整備されPCで創作活動するには申し分ない環境であり、沢山の自由時間を使ってオーストラリアやNew Zealandの鉄道に関するホームページの作成を始めたのでした。
I would like to look back at why I decided to create the AUNZ Railfan website with a focus on Australia.
Fifteen years ago, in February 2010, my first overseas trip alone was to Australia.
At first, I didn't know anything about Australia and wanted to visit each state capital if I was going to go there anyway, so I took Brisbane (half day) → XPT → Sydney (half day) → Indian Pacific → Adelaide (1 night) → night bus → Melbourne (1 night) → XPT → Sydney (3 nights), which was a bit like a Hokkaido newbie's trip from Sapporo to Hakodate, Kushiro and Asahikawa. It was a crazy itinerary for a beginner in Hokkaido, incorporating Sapporo, Hakodate, Kushiro and Asahikawa.
In 2012, the first trip to New Zealand was via Sydney.
At the time, there were few Japanese-language pages introducing Australian and New Zealand railways, and while I fantasised about running a personal website introducing overseas railways like 2427Junction.com, the busyness of university graduation and finding a job kept me away from hobby activities.
However, after about a year of employment, I was diagnosed with blood cancer and had to spend about three years in hospital and at home for anti-cancer drug treatment and a bone marrow transplant.
Fortunately, my hospital room had WIFI and was a perfect environment for creative work on my PC, and I used a lot of my free time to start creating a website about Australian and New Zealand railways.

当初は「忍者ホームページ」というサービスを使用し「http://auandnzrailfan.zouri.jp」という無料ドメインで運営していました。
作成にあたり2427Junction.com氏の協力もあり、個別ページはテーブルコードを基調とするレイアウトを踏襲して作成されました。
「忍者ホームページ」には広告収入を付けることができるサービスがあり、後に8年目の年にトータルで1,500円という僅かなお小遣いを得ることができました。
ホームページの開設は休職期間満了で退職して無職だったこともあり、現在では考えられない程の高頻度でページを更新していました。
この年の9月には退院後初めて海外旅行でパースへ行き、人生初の西オーストラリア州訪問となりました。
そのため、10月以降は西オーストラリア州のページを精力的に作成していました。
Initially, the site was operated under the free domain ‘http://auandnzrailfan.zouri.jp’ using the ‘Ninja Homepage’ service.
With the help of 2427Junction.com, individual pages were created following a table code-based layout.
The ‘Ninja Homepage’ had a service that allowed advertising revenue to be attached, and later in my eighth year I was able to earn a small allowance of 1,500 yen in total.
The website was set up because I had left the company at the end of my leave of absence and was unemployed, so I updated the pages at a higher frequency than would be possible nowadays.
In September of that year, I travelled overseas to Perth for the first time since my discharge from hospital, visiting Western Australia for the first time in my life.
Therefore, from October onwards, I was working energetically on the Western Australia page.

2016年はメルボルンを再訪しました。
メルボルンは学生の時の2010年に1回行ったきでり、滞在も僅か1泊2日という日本人らしい駆け足なスケジュールでした。
その時は殆ど知識が無いなかでトラムとメトロの踏切を偶然通過し、その時はスケジュールの都合で写真も撮れませんでした。
後にその踏切が立体交差で廃止になったことをニュースで知り、踏切撤去プロジェクトが進行する前に再訪を決意したのでした。
また、2016年は日本の中古電車の聖地であったジャカルタを初訪問し、インドネシアの鉄道のページも作成しました。
なお、ローカル列車として紹介したジャカルタコタ駅からの客車列車は全て引退してしまったそうです。
この頃は時短勤務で復職しておりましたが、時間的にも余裕があり更新頻度もまだまだ勢いがありました。
In 2016, I revisited Melbourne.
I had been to Melbourne once before, when I was a student in 2010, and stayed only one night and two days, which is a rushed schedule for a Japanese.
At that time, with little knowledge of the city, I happened to pass a tram and metro crossing and was unable to take any photos due to my schedule.
I later learnt from the news that the level crossing had been decommissioned due to a multi-level crossing, and decided to revisit before the level crossing removal project got underway.
In 2016, I also visited Jakarta for the first time, which was a mecca for used Japanese trains, and created a page on Indonesian railways.
It should be noted that all the passenger trains from Jakarta Kota station, which were introduced as local trains, have been retired.
At that time, I had returned to work on a shorter working day, but I had more time to spare and the frequency of updates was still going strong.

2017年は初めてシドニーのトランスポートエキスポに参加しました。
トランスポートエキスポはシドニーの乗り物好きには憧れのイベントで、スケジュールを調整し3日間のイベントのみ堪能して帰国しました。
この頃になると仕事が段々と忙しくなり、ホームページの更新頻度もかなり少なくなりました。
In 2017, I attended Sydney's Transport Expo for the first time.
Transport Expo is a Sydney vehicle enthusiast's dream event, and I adjusted my schedule and only enjoyed the three-day event before returning home.
By this time, work was getting busier and busier, and the website was updated much less frequently.

2018年はホームページの更新を全くしておりません。
仕事が忙しかったのもありますが、完全にサボりです。
オーストラリアについては、初となるケアンズ訪問と、年末年始には初体験となるマレーシア・クアラルンプール経由でメルボルンとアデレードを訪れました。
メルボルンでは人生で初となるオーストラリアの年越しカウントダウン花火大会をフリンダースストリート駅で鑑賞。
そのあとにジ・オーバーランドで全区間の車窓映像を4Kアクションカメラで撮影しました…が、そのデータをPCに転送する前に消去してしまうという痛恨のミスをしてしまうのでした。
（既にPCにデータを移したと思い込みカードをフォーマットしてしまった）
We have not updated our website at all in 2018.
Partly because I was busy with work, but also because I completely slacked off.
As for Australia, I visited Cairns for the first time and Melbourne and Adelaide via Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, for the first time during the year-end and New Year holidays.
In Melbourne, for the first time in my life, I watched the Australian New Year's Eve countdown fireworks display at Flinders Street Station.
Afterwards, I filmed the entire section of the Overland with a 4K action camera... but I made the painful mistake of deleting the data before transferring it to my PC.
(I thought I had already transferred the data to my PC and formatted the card)

2019年もホームページを殆ど更新しておらず、たった1つのみ追加しただけでした。
5月の大型連休にクイーンズランド州を訪問し、初めてブリスベン近郊だけでなく長距離列車を利用しロックハンプトンに到達しました。
ロックハンプトンの併用軌道はずっと行きたいと思っており、いつ来るか分からない貨物列車を見逃すことが無いようにマクドナルド(ご当地メニュー？WAGYUバーガー)片手にずっと線路際で1日を過ごしました。
それが良くなかったのか、それはそれは酷い食当たりとなり、衰弱しきった身体でなんとかスケジュールをこなし帰国することとなりました。
また、年末年始はシドニーとメルボルンを友人と共に中国（行きは上海、帰りは北京）経由で訪問。
これがコロナウイルスによるパンデミック前の最後の海外旅行となりました。
The website was hardly updated in 2019 and only one addition was made.
I visited Queensland over the May holiday weekend and for the first time reached Rockhampton using long distance trains as well as the Brisbane suburbs.
I had always wanted to visit the combined track at Rockhampton and spent the whole day by the tracks with a McDonald's (local menu? WAGYU burger) in hand to make sure I didn't miss a goods train that could come at any moment.
I had a bad food poisoning and managed to complete my schedule and return to Japan with a weakened body.
I also visited Sydney and Melbourne via China (to Shanghai and back to Beijing) with friends over the New Year holidays.
This was the last trip abroad before the coronavirus pandemic.

2020年はコロナウイルスによるパンデミックで、大きな転機を迎えました。
休業により時間的な余裕が生まれ、ホームページの大幅な再編にとりかかりました。
ホームページ開設の2015年に比べ、はパソコンよりもスマートフォンの方からのアクセスが圧倒的に多い時代となりました。
旧来のテーブルコードを使用したデザインのページでは閲覧するためには上下に加えて左右のスクロールも必要であり、現在は殆ど姿を消した仕様でした。
PC画面でもスマートフォン画面でも適切なレイアウトが表示されるよう、全てのページをレスポンシブデザインに変更しました。
その際にトップページも更新しましたが、各地域の現地時刻を表示させたデザインも気に入っていたため、ローカルタイムインデックスとしてフッターにひっそりとリンクを残してあります。
なお、レスポンシブデザインは同じくスマートフォン対応を検討していた2427Junction.com氏にも提供し、それ以降に更新された氏のページはAUNZ RAILFANと同じレイアウトとなっています。
ホームページのリニューアルもそうですが、時間的余裕もあり新規ページも発足時に迫る勢いの頻度で更新。（ニュージーランドの投稿は5年振り！）
AUNZ RAILFANのTwitter（X）も2020年の9月に運用を開始しました。
The year 2020 marked a major turning point with the coronavirus pandemic.
The closure gave us more time to work on a major restructuring of our website.
Compared to 2015, when the website was launched, the website is now accessed by far more people on smartphones than on computers.
The old table-code design of the pages required scrolling left and right as well as up and down in order to view them, a specification that has now almost disappeared.
All pages were converted to responsive design so that the appropriate layout is displayed on both PC and smartphone screens.
The top page was also updated at that time, but the link to the local time index is quietly left in the footer, as we liked the design that displayed the local time in each region.
The responsive design was also provided to 2427Junction.com, which was also considering smartphone compatibility, and his page, which has since been updated, has the same layout as AUNZ RAILFAN.
As well as the renewal of the website, new pages have been updated with a frequency approaching that of the launch, with time to spare. (It's been five years since we posted anything from New Zealand!)
AUNZ RAILFAN's Twitter (X) also became operational in September 2020.

2021年もコロナウイルスの影響により、海外への渡航はできていません。
仕事は通常勤務になったため時間的な余裕は減りましたが、そもそもオーストラリアへ渡航することが無くなったため、数か月に1回程度の頻度でページを更することができました。
コロナ前は海外旅行での撮影が最優先で、ホームページは後回しという状態が続いていました。
シドニーのCsetやブリスベンのICEのように渡航制限中に引退となった車両もあり、それらを紹介するページを投稿するというパターンも発生しました。
Due to the coronavirus, I have not been able to travel abroad in 2021.
My work has become more regular and I have less time to spare, but as I no longer travel to Australia in the first place, I have been able to renew the page every few months.
Before Corona, my priority was to film on my overseas trips, and the website took a back seat.
Some vehicles were retired during travel restrictions, such as the Cset in Sydney and the ICE in Brisbane, and a pattern of posting pages introducing them also occurred.

2022年は2018年と同様、ホームページの更新を全くしておりません。
この頃はオーストラリアに行けない反動で国内旅行を多く行くようになり、ホームページの更新をサボっていました。
今思えば、定期的にオーストラリアに行っていたことがホームページ更新の原動力であったような気もします。
2022年後半には渡航制限解除がいよいよ具体化し、それに向けてオーストラリアの各都市の情報を収集、訪問地を決める作業に没頭することとなりました。
In 2022, as in 2018, we did not update our website at all.
At that time, I started to do a lot of domestic travel as a reaction to not being able to go to Australia, and I skipped updating the website.
Looking back, I feel that my regular trips to Australia were the driving force behind updating the website.
The lifting of travel restrictions in late 2022 was finally taking shape, and in preparation for this, I was immersed in the process of gathering information on various Australian cities and deciding where to visit.

渡航制限期間中に新しい車両やライトレールが登場し、それらを紹介するページの作成に勤しみました。
また、ネットを通じて現地の方との交流もでき、さらにオーストラリアの鉄道について知見を深めることができました。
In 2023, we revisited Sydney and Melbourne as our first overseas trips since the Corona pandemic.
During the restricted travel period, new rolling stock and light rail were introduced and I worked hard to create a page introducing them.
I was also able to interact with local people through the internet and further deepen my knowledge of Australian railways.

2024年はオーストラリアに4回も渡航する大判振舞いでした。
というのも2023年にジェットスターで関空～ブリスベン新規就航2万円キャンペーンが実施され、300日先でないと空席が無いセールだったため、仕事の予定よりも先にセール航空券を半分博打で購入していました。
休暇も無事に取得でき、訪問先を物色しているなかで、ピチリチ鉄道が50周年で魅力的なイベントが予定されているという情報をキャッチしました。
ピチリチ鉄道は公共交通機関での到達が不可能なアウトバックの田舎町で、イベント期間の航空券も予約はしていませんでした。
航空券も予約しておらず今までレンタカーを運転したことも無かったので、知っているけど行かなかった場所のひとつとなる予定でした。
しかし知り合ったオーストラリア人が、絶対に行った方がいい！飛行機、ホテル、レンタカーの予約をするだけ。簡単！と強く勧められ人生初となるオーストラリアレンタカーにチャレンジしました。
オーストラリアでのレンタカーは今まで到達不可能であった魅力的な鉄道撮影地や博物館へのアクセスが可能となり、世界が一気に広がったことを実感しました。
In 2024, I had a great opportunity to travel to Australia four times.
This was because in 2023, Jetstar ran a 20,000 yen campaign for new flights from Kansai Airport to Brisbane, and the sale only had seats available 300 days in advance, so I took a half gamble and bought a sale ticket ahead of my work schedule.
With the holiday successfully taken, I was looking for places to visit when I heard that The Pichirici Railway was celebrating its 50th anniversary and had some fascinating events planned.
The Pichirici Railway is in a rural outback town that is unreachable by public transport, and I had not booked any flights for the event period.
I hadn't booked a ticket and had never driven a rental car before, so it was going to be one of those places I knew about but never went to.
But an Australian I met said I should definitely go! Just book flights, hotel and car hire. It's easy! I decided to rent a car in Australia for the first time in my life.
Renting a car in Australia gave me access to fascinating railway filming locations and museums that were previously unreachable, and I realised that my world had suddenly expanded.
そしてレンタカー最終日、空港まで100㎞程のスノータウンで貨物駅を見ようと舗装路に進入したところスタックし、己の浅はかさと無力さを実感しました。
ピチリチ鉄道を激推ししたオーストラリア人にライン電話をし、現地警察を通じて（レンタカーのロードサービスは未舗装路対象外だったことも判明）奇跡的に10㎞程のところのロードサービスに救助してもらえました。
後で知ったのですが、現場のスノータウンから100㎞離れたポートピリーの警察の紹介で、当初は200㎞離れたポートオーガスタの業者を手配するつもりだったらしく、その場合は帰国の飛行機に確実に乗れていませんでした。
また、スノータウンはかなりの田舎で、有名な連続殺人事件の遺体遺棄現場も近く、状況によっては完全犯罪も可能な立地でした。
オーストラリアのアウトバックは社会から隔絶された世界でもあり、自然の脅威や犯罪に巻き込まれる危険性を孕み、一定の割合で亡くなる人もいるそうです。
新たな教訓を胸に、これからも引き続き活動を続けていきたいと思います。

And on the last day of car rental, I realised how shallow and helpless I was when I got stuck when entering a paved road to see the freight station in Snowtown, about 100 km from the airport.
I phoned an Australian who was a great advocate of The Pichirici Railway, and through the local police (it turned out that the road service for rental cars did not cover dirt roads), miraculously I was rescued by a road service about 10 km away.
I later found out that the police referral was from the police in Port Pirie, 100 km from Snowtown, the scene of the accident, and that they had originally intended to arrange for a contractor in Port Augusta, 200 km away, in which case I would certainly not have been able to catch my flight home.
Snowtown was also quite rural and close to the site of a famous serial killer's body dump, where the perfect crime could have been committed under the right circumstances.
The Australian outback is also a world isolated from society, fraught with natural threats and the risk of becoming involved in crime, and a certain percentage of people die.
With new lessons learned, we will continue our work in the future.
